The construction component of the course was the first thing that we did in the course. We were to make a step stool out a a pice of wood from a tree. Before we could do all the fun stuff, we had to doe the boring stuff...the safety. Yes we had to learn about all the tools that we were gonna use and all the safety rules because Mr. Morley was a safety first kind of guy. We had to read a brief 3 paragraph article on each machine and then do safety quiz. Mr. Morley had to see if we got perfect on every single quiz before we could use any of the machines. We also did demos with Mr. Morley watching us to see if we knew what we were doing. After everyone passed the demos we were ready to cut our wood.
So the pice of wood that we did each did our demos on was the piece that we each used for our actual stool. It was then time to cut our pieces out. Using the hand saw again we cut out our 4 pieces. We used the band saw to cut out the diagonal lines and the arcs while carefully watching if we we were doing it right. We learned that we must cut on the waste side of the line on the pieces so that we don't mess up our wood that was part off the stool. Many people messed up and they suffered for it when they got their marks back. After we finished cutting, we ensured that our stools were smooth as a new born child's face. We used the belt sand and sand paper where the belt sander couldn't get to. We then screwed everything together to get our final product. We made sure the stool wasn't uneven on on side and we made sure everything a was screwed highly so that it would lose and fall apart.
